Why December 25th?

Tim Challies links to a Christianity Today article written by Elesha Coffman that answers this question.

Update: See also Justin Taylor's post on this question, which provides an article from Andreas Köstenberger's website.

An alternative view, that Christmas is celebrated on December 25th cause that's when Jesus was born. Documented meticulously.

Thank you for sharing this 'article'! I have always held to the belief that it doesn't matter why we celebrate Jesus' birthday on Dec 25th because it doesn't change the fact that I know my Lord came to earth as a baby, was born, lived, wss crucified, buried, and ROSE again to pay the penalty for MY sin. AND that I'm going to celebrate and worship Him for doing this for me!

I tend to not worry about the claims of Atheists who just want to "muddy" the waters for us believers trying to give GLORY to our Lord and celebrate his birth. They think they can persuade us to turn away from praising our Lord by making us worried about the origins of the celebrations of Christmas. To me, it is not necessary to fully understand HOW our celebration timing and traditions came about but to continue to Celebrate and bring Glory to our LOrd and Savior.

That said...I truly appreciate this link that Matt has posted here, have read it and even understand much of what it says! :) Just like I thought...a lot of Atheists (under the direction of their nongod...Satan????) trying to upset Christians and get us to doubt our Lord and Savior. HOWEVER... true believers are not swayed by this because we KNOW Christ and he has proven himself to us in many ways seen and unseen.
I appreciate the time and effort someone took to research this information. It's nice to know the history about this special day. And the thought that it really may have been December 25th that my LORD and Savior came to earth as a baby makes this day even more special. I have NO DOUBT that my God could/would allow us to know the actual day his son was born.
I see one more glaring reason to believe that Jesus was actually born on December 25th... SATAN keeps on attacking this knowledge with all his forces of evil and yet 2000 + yrs later, we still celebrate this most special birth.
I for one would like to stick my tongue out at Satan and say...nah nah na nah nah...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS! I LOVE YOU!!!
